The government must stop privatisation and commercialisation of education, said All India Democratic Students Organisation (AIDSO) at its district-level conference held here on Friday.

A resolution was passed to this effect. M.J.Walter, State secretary, AIDSO, and V.N. Rajasekhar, national vice-president, demanded that educational institutions should be prevented from collecting money in the name of donation and capitation fee.

Student-members from various colleges in the city spoke about the difficulties in getting scholarships. The students said the scholarships were not disbursed in time during the academic year. They complained that Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation crew avoided stops where more a number of school and college students, with free bus passes, would be waiting to board buses.

Girl college students must be protected from sexual harassment and assaults, they said. They also resolved that popular media should be brought under censorship to check cultural degradation.
