Collector Sandeep Nanduri said that legal actions were being taken by the government to close down Sterlite Copper unit here.
As per an order by Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) dated May 23, 2018, electricity supply to the unit was disconnected in the early morning hours of May 24.
Water supply to the unit for industrial operation was also disconnected, the Collector said in a statement on Saturday.
The unit had not been made operational since April 9, 2018 as its plea seeking renewal for consent to operate was dismissed by the TNPCB. In 2013, the late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, through TNPCB, ordered the closure of the unit on March 23 after a gas leak incident, which caused burning sensation to the eyes of those affected by it.
The unit got consent to operate on August 8 in 2013 from the National Green Tribunal after challenging the TNPCB’s closure order, the statement added.
