Ecstasy, distribution of chocolates and exchange of greetings overflowed from this small rented house sitting humbly inside a compound wall along with eight other similar dwellings at Pettai near Tirunelveli Town on Wednesday as one of its members, S. Jasmine, a student of Corporation Girls' Higher Secondary School in Tirunelveli Town, secured the first rank in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination with 495 out of 500.

Ms. Jasmine's score reads: Tamil – 98, English – 99, Mathematics – 100, Science – 100 and Social Science – 98.

“The guidance of my teachers, prayers of my parents and the hard work on my part that extended up to 1 a.m. every day has bagged me the first rank. After obtaining BE degree in computer science and engineering, I'll become a civil servant to serve the society, particularly to the poorest of the poor,” vows Ms. Jasmine.

Third rank-holder M. Ramya of AVS High School, Puliyangudi and daughter of K. Murugan, a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus conductor, wants to become a neuro physician while M. Jeyeline of Sarah Tucker Girls' Higher Secondary School, Palayamkottai, who has also bagged third rank, wants to become an IAS officer after doing her BE in Civil Engineering.

“Brought laurels”

While honouring all the three girls with shields and shawls, District Collector M. Jayaraman told them: “You've made the district proud. I'm so happy that the corporation school girl student from our district has bagged the State first rank”.
