Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin will inaugurate the eighth samathuvapuram of Madurai district at Attapatti in Kottampatti panchayat union.

Works at the samathuvapuram would be completed by the first week of January with the Deputy Chief Minister expected to inaugurate it by the last week January or the first week of February, sources told “The Hindu” here on Saturday.

Of the total 702 houses constructed in the seven earlier samathuvapurams, 623 houses have been occupied. In the Attapatti samathuvapuram, 100 houses were nearing completion on 9.17 acres of poromboke land identified for the purpose.

A sum of Rs. 2.58 crore has been sanctioned by the State Government for construction of houses, laying of tar roads, provision of drinking water facilities and establishment of a fair price shop.

In addition to the infrastructure provided with this fund, two playgrounds would come up at a total cost of Rs. 1.80 lakh under the ‘Namakku Naame’ scheme, in which the public would pitch in one-third of the total cost.

The progress of the Attapatti samathuvapuram was being reviewed constantly by the district administration with top officials regularly visiting the site.

While this samathuvapuram was sanctioned for 2008-09, another one has been sanctioned at Pothanpatti panchayat in Usilampatti panchayat union for 2009-10. Tenders have been finalised with work orders to be issued soon.

Allotment of houses to the beneficiaries will be: SCs 40, BCs 25, MBCs 25 and Others 10.

The first samathuvapuram in Tamil Nadu was inaugurated on August 17, 1998 at Melakottai village in Madurai by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
