Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa has questioned the locus standi of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam treasurer M.K. Stalin in speaking about Madurai without having sanctioned developmental projects for the city when he was Deputy Chief Minister and his brother M.K. Alagiri was Union Minister.

Without referring to Mr. Alagiri’s name, he said Mr. Stalin got a chance to address the public in Madurai only after the AIADMK came to power.

“In fact, he could not even come to Madurai at one point of time… The fact that he was able to talk in Madurai shows that law and order is good in city,” Mr. Chellappa said.

Addressing a press conference in the presence of AIADMK MLAs and councillors, the Mayor said development of Mattuthavani bus stand, Ring Road, High Court Bench, underground drainage system, shifting of omni bus stand and opening of Amma canteens were some of the accomplishments of the AIADMK government.

“The sincerity of DMK towards Madurai can be understood from the fact that the Rs.36 crore announced by the then Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi several years ago to mark the silver jubilee of Madurai Corporation is yet to come?” he asked.

Mr. Chellappa said toll collection on the Ring Road was about Rs.5 lakh a day, whereas there was no proper management of toll gates during the DMK regime.

“Mr. Stalin could not get even a single government college for Madurai and Mr. Alagiri failed to get international tag for Madurai airport. It is ridiculous on the part of Mr. Stalin to say nothing is happening in Madurai,” he noted.

Council meet

Earlier in the day, a special meeting of corporation councillors was convened to thank AIADMK general secretary and former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa for her efforts to get the storage level in Periyar dam raised to 142 feet.

“Madurai will now be able to overcome drinking water crisis and farmers in five southern districts will greatly benefit,” he Mayor said, moving a resolution in this regard.

Tirumangalam MLA M. Muthuramalingam, Madurai Central MLA R. Sundararajan, Deputy Mayor R. Thiraviam and councillors S.T. Jayabalan and Kannagi Baskaran also spoke in support of the resolution.
