Thousands of Muslims in the district celebrated Eid-ul-Fitr by offering special prayers and taking part in mass prayers.
Adorned in new clothes, many assembled at Igdah Maidan in Kalavasal and offered mass prayers. The celebrations also marked the end of a month of fasting which is obligatory during Ramzan.
The Muslims believe in not taking food or water in the daytime for the 29 to 30 days in the month of Ramzan to purify the body and soul. This is also to understand better the hunger experienced by those in need of food.
Sumptuous feastsMany Muslim families hosted sumptuous feasts and exchanged sweets and pleasantries with their families and friends.
Since the celebration also emphasises the need to share the riches with the poor and the needy, financial assistance was extended to them and common feasts were organised for them.
Many local shops and businesses remained shut in the city.
