Tamil Nadu Electricity Consumer’s Council has announced that small and medium scale industries, hotels, cinema theatres and traders will down shutters in several districts on January 9, 2013 to raise their voice against the power cuts.

A joint council meeting was held in Madurai, on Sunday in which representatives from Coimbatore, Erode, Hosur, Karur, Salem, Trichy, Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar and Tuticorin participated. “We insist that there should be equitable power supply in the State. When Chennai enjoys the benefit of minimal power cut, industries and trade bodies in other parts of the State are left to languish under severe power cuts”, said D. Balasundaram, chairman of the Electricity Consumer’s Council.

“Ten days ago we made a representation to the Chief Minister, Electricity Minister and TANGEDCO Chairman to ensure equitable power supply in the State, besides seeking an appointment to meet them. We have not got any reply. To take to their notice our request we are planning to down the shutters of commercial establishments on January 9”, he added.

“To meet the power demands, the State should purchase 2000 MW power from other States until May 2013. We cannot wait for another two years to get power from other states citing the congestion in power corridors. We can purchase power from Southern States like Andhra Pradesh”, Mr Balasundaram further stated.

V.S. Manimaran, president of Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association also spoke.
