The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday witnessed a slew of public interest litigation petitions on the violence in Thoothukudi that left 13 people dead and scores of others injured in police firing and lathi-charge.
The PILs demanded a probe into the killing of protesters in firing and appropriate action against the police. The petitioners also sought treatment for those injured, including the police, at the Madurai Government Rajaji Hospital and restoration of internet service.
K. Kathiresan of Madurai, in his petition, said the attack against the protesters was done in cold blood and the policemen responsible for the firing should be booked under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC. He also sought a judicial probe into the incident.
S. Muthukumar of Madurai said that the injured persons, including police personnel, should be provided treatment at speciality hospitals in Madurai. He termed the attack against protesters as a criminal conspiracy.
Adequate compensation should be provided to families of the deceased and the CBI should probe the incident, K. K. Ramesh said in his petition. C. Ezhilarasu pleaded for the restoration of internet service. A. Syed Abdul Kader sought a direction permitting advocates and human rights activists to conduct a legal aid clinic and undertake fact-finding missions in Thoothukudi. M. Alagarsamy sought appropriate action against the police.
