Skill training in technical areas help students get employment in industries and other establishments, said Collector C. Kamaraj here on Thursday.
Distributing certificates to successful students at TVS Community College, Mr. Kamaraj said that the institution, established in 2003, had so far facilitated employment in different organisations/fields to 1,385 students who did their vocational courses there.
He urged students who were mostly from rural areas to make the most of the programme since they had very little exposure to regular academic curriculum. Courses such as auto-mechanic, electrical, AC mechanic, plumber, nursing, executive office assistants, among others, were being offered.
He lauded the TVS institution and the teachers for making many youths economically independent. Every year, around 1,000 students joined these programmes, he said, and offered all support from the district administration. Banks offered loans to eligible applicants to set up their own shops. He suggested the students to make use of the services of District Industries Centre for getting guidance.
TVS Schools Director R. Srinivasan said that the college offered short-term training and employment-oriented courses for six-month and one-year duration by experts from various fields. There was a good response to the successful students among many employers. Apart from this, the students were taught nuances in value-based learning, yoga and meditation, he added.
College correspondent Col. V. Janakarajan released a souvenir and Mr. Kamaraj received the first copy. K. Srinivasan read the annual report and K. Kanagaraj welcomed the gathering. Selvi Santhosham, Senior Manager (Projects) of the college, Mahalir Thittam officials from Madurai, Tirunelveli, Sivaganga, Theni and Dindigul districts participated.
The college conducts programmes is association with Tamil Nadu Women Development Corporation and Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board.
