Five persons who suffered severe injuries in the blast at a cracker unit near Sivakasi are in ‘critical’ condition at the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai.

Totally, 15 persons, including one woman, were rushed to the GRH last evening and in the early hours of Thursday for emergency treatment.

N. Mohan, GRH Dean, has said that the condition of five persons is critical and all efforts are being taken to save their lives. Surgeries were performed by specialist doctors on persons who had multiple fractures and head injuries.

The patients were being treated at special wards in the Trauma Care centre of the GRH and also at its main campus. “Orthopaedic, neurosurgery and general surgery specialists are attending them round-the-clock. A woman who sustained burns is undergoing treatment,” he said. Two male patients who were injured in the blast have been admitted in the neuro care wing of Meenakshi Mission Hospital and Research Centre here on Wednesday evening.
