Collector L. Subramanian has ordered a joint inspection of the mini-bus stand located opposite Government Rajaji Hospital here by the City Traffic Police, Transport and Corporation authorities.
According to officials, who attended the Road Safety Meeting chaired by the Collector on Wednesday, the change of the location was necessitated following complaints of frequent traffic jams reported near the hospital. Minibus drivers hindered traffic flow by getting into the bus stand and coming out of it during peak hours.
On many occasions, ambulances were caught in traffic jams. Hence, the Collector ordered an inspection and allocation of an alternative site, they said.
Though some suggested Anna bus stand as an alternative, the Collector said it could be recommended by the officers after the inspection, and in that case it would be implemented.
Then, laying of speed breakers came up in the meeting. As accidents were reported frequently at Othakadai four-lane intersection, the officials were instructed to examine the possibility of laying speed breakers at the junction.
Similarly, laying of speed breakers at some of the approach roads leading to major intersections in the city was also taken up for discussion, the officials said.
Bus stop shiftingTwo TNSTC bus stops – ITI bus stop at K. Pudur and Moondrumavadi bus stop (from Pudur side) – would be shifted as they were too cramped. The City Traffic Police had proposed to shift Moondrumavadi bus stop in such a way that it would become user-friendly, especially to school students. But, before shifting it, encroachments had to be evicted, they said.
The Collector ordered its immediate removal.
The police had also suggested regulation of autorickshaws plying in the city as several vehicles from other districts were found operating here.
Dr. Subramanian ordered random checks of permits and directed the Transport Department officials to detain vehicles violating rules.
All pedestrian pathways and zebra crossings would soon sport a new look as the Collector readily agreed to paint them, the officials added.
