Security has been tightened and the State and National highways in Theni district have been brought under the security scanner. All check posts were alerted to monitor vehicles.

In the wake of police firing in Immanual Sekaran guru puja in Paramkudi in Ramanathapuram district on Sunday, sufficient police were posted to guard the statues of state and national leaders, and community heads. Thevar statues at Andipatti, Gandamanur pass, Dharmanaickenpatti, Odaipatti were guarded by the police for the past two days.

Now, they have started guarding even digital and flex banners erected by supporters of Immanual Sekaran in places like Kottur, Chinnamanur and Bodinayakkanur. Security has been beefed up at Kottur and Seelayampatti.

The police said that even a small spark might turn into a communal clash in the district. “So, we have taken all precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incidents,” the police added. In 1989, communal clash rocked Bodinayakkanur.

The bus services to Ramanathapuram and Tuticorin were suspended on Sunday evening. Following unrest in Paramakudi, the TNSTC officials stopped operating buses to these pockets.

However, the officials said that mofussil buses to other areas such as Dindigul, Coimbatore, Tirupur were operating.

As for the night service operations in the city, out of the 38 routes normally plied in the night, they were selective on the stretches as a precaution.

The pockets including Chintamani, Avaniapuram and parts of Perungudi wore a deserted look as the news spread about the violence in Paramakudi.
