August 23, 2012 12:05 pm | Updated 12:05 pm IST - MADURAI

A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court Bench in Madurai challenging the order of proclamation of exigency issued by the Tirunelveli Collector, by exercising powers under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, at Idinthakarai and Kudankulam between August 11 and September 10.

G. Sivarasa Boopathy, secretary of Human Rights Protection Centre, a private organisation based in Kanyakumari, had filed the petition through his counsel T. Lajapathi Roy and S. Vanchinathan in support of those who were against commissioning of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. The petitioner claimed that there was no necessity for continuing the exigency order.
