The search for a new Vice-Chancellor for Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) here has begun with the State government initiating the process to form a committee which would recommend three names to the Governor from the list of candidates aspiring to become the next VC.

As the tenure of incumbent VC Kalyani Mathivanan comes to an end on April 8, the mandatory search committee is being constituted through a gazette notification.

The search panel will have three persons – one each from the Syndicate and Senate and one nominated by the Governor.

N. Rajasekar, Registrar, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the search committee was being constituted as per instructions from the Governor’s office.

The last date for filing of nominations to elect a nominee by the Syndicate is March 5.

Scrutiny of nominations and publication of list of valid nominations will be done on the same day. If the number of valid nominations is more than one, an election will be held on March 26.

Meanwhile, a separate gazette notification has been issued asking the Senate to make its choice of candidate to the Vice-Chancellor Search Committee.

The last date for filing of nominations is March 12 and scrutiny will be done the same day. If the number of valid nominations is more than one, election will be held on March 31.

After completing the election and nomination process, the university will send the names of persons chosen by Syndicate and Senate to the Governor who will then make his choice of the third member on the panel. The Governor’s nominee will be the chairperson of the search committee.

University authorities said that persons nominated by the Syndicate and Senate should not be connected in any way to the MKU.
