School staff picked up for questioning

July 19, 2013 11:48 am | Updated 11:49 am IST - MADURAI:

Staff members of C.S.Ramachary Memorial Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Tirunagar in Madurai were picked up by the Tuticorin police on Thursday for interrogation in connection with the drowning of four Plus Two students in the sea during an excursion to the port city on July 12.

Meanwhile, a section of the parents staged an agitation before the school at Tirunagar on Thursday, condemning the police for "not taking any action" against the school authorities and demanding the withdrawal of recognition granted to the school.

Chief Educational Officer (CEO) C.Amuthavalli, the Revenue Divisional Officer and police officials arrived at the scene and attempted to open a dialogue with the protesting parents. The CEO pointed out that she had already issued a show-cause notice to the school seeking an explanation for failing to inform the Education Department about the tour, and for allowing the children to swim in the sea.

Since the parents complained to her that the police were hesitating to initiate action against the school correspondent who, they claimed, had not spoken to any of the parents after the tragic incident, the CEO had herself lodged a complaint against the correspondent and the principal with the Tirunagar police. The Tirunagar police said they would forward the complaint to the Tuticorin police as the incident had taken place within their jurisdiction.
