The Association of Heads of High and Higher Secondary Schools, Tamil Nadu, has sought the support of parents and society in chalking out an effective plan for educational progress of students in the context of changing scenario.

Heads of government schools in Madurai district met here on Saturday and held a discussion with various stakeholders.

They decided to seek the views of police, advocates and mental health experts on how to discipline and orient the school students at a time when the headmasters/headmistresses and teachers could not punish or even scold erring students due to societal pressure.

S. Baskaran, association district secretary, told reporters that the purpose of holding an exclusive meeting was to create public awareness of hardships faced by schoolteachers to improve students’ academic performance.

“Parents too have an important role to play and their cooperation is a must for us. Many people blame the teachers but in today’s situation, we cannot give any punishment to students if they do not study well. Teachers are facing a lot of constraints because they are answerable to education department officials and parents,” he said.

Mr. Baskaran said teachers were functioning under so much pressure that they had to seek the guidance of the police and the advocates on how to handle school students.

M.R. Pauldas, association’s district president, made an appeal to school correspondents, parents and society to understand the plight of the HMs and teachers.
