The old students of Madura College Higher Secondary School plan to come together for a reunion on their campus on Sunday and to revive the Old Students' Association and various related activities.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Headmaster S. Senthooran said that the 159-year-old school had produced many stalwarts in various fields and this event would provide a chance to revive the association, elect office-bearers and make the forum vibrant. The school had the privilege of hosting a public meeting on February 2, 1897, in which Swami Vivekananda spoke and to commemorate the meet, a life-size statue of the leader adorned the school façade.
M.S. Meenakshi Sundaram, secretary, Madura College Board, would be the chief guest. N.S. Jayaraman, a 1968-batch school pupil leader, said that the meet would also discuss on establishing a library building in the school within six months. The facility, estimated to cost Rs. 13 lakh, would come up with the efforts of old students, and if needed, funds from the local MLA would be sought.
G.R. Subramanian, former head clerk of the school and also an alumnus, who was behind this initiative, said that the association also planned to provide financial support to the top three scorers in Tenth and Twelfth examinations.
P.M. Joseph, who completed SSLC in the late 60s, gave an assurance to donate Rs. 15,000 to the topper in Plus Two examinations.
As many as 500 old students were expected at the meeting.
