SC verdict, a victory for college teachers: V-C

March 13, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - MADURAI:

A day after the Supreme Court upheld her appointment, Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University Kalyani Mathivanan on Thursday said the apex court’s verdict was a victory for college teachers since the suspense whether they are eligible or not for occupying top posts in universities in Tamil Nadu has ended.

“It is a victory from the college faculty point of view. That only university professors can become vice-chancellors in our State has been negated through this verdict,” she said.

Passing the orders on Wednesday, the Supreme Court had held that the University Grants Commission regulations of the year 2010 prescribing minimum qualification for appointment of vice-chancellors are not mandatory unless the State government had adopted these regulations.

“The underlying message in my case is that every associate professor in a college is equally qualified and competent to become a vice-chancellor. Why can’t a college teacher aspire to be a vice-chancellor,” she asked.
