Members of ‘Save Madurai Kamaraj University Coalition’ submitted a petition at the district collectorate here on Friday seeking initiation of action against the Vice-Chancellor and other authorities in a case relating to the alleged assault of a retired professor A. Srinivasan.

Mr. Srinivasan, convenor of Save MKU Coalition, was allegedly attacked by two persons near his home at Nagamalai Pudukottai on May 16, when he was returning home from a morning walk.

He had submitted a complaint to the Nagamalai Pudukottai police alleging that he was assaulted by hired goons at the behest of the vice-chancellor, registrar (in-charge), public relations officer (in-charge), director of department of youth welfare and a retired staff of MKU.

The police subsequently registered a criminal case against the five university authorities and two other persons under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 307 (attempt to murder).

Two persons were arrested.

In the petition submitted to the collector, P. Vijayakumar, co-convenor of the coalition, claimed that the two persons arrested confessed to the police that they assaulted the retired professor on instructions from DMK functionaries Jayaraman and Saravanan.

The duo mentioned in the confession statement are supporters of the Vice-Chancellor and the assault was made because Mr. Srinivasan questioned the alleged irregularities in the functioning of MKU, he charged.

Therefore, he has requested the district collector to direct the police to take Jayaraman and Saravanan into custody, interrogate them and also take action against the university authorities.
