The issue of naming the airport terminal after former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran triggered a debate
The Corporation Council meeting here witnessed a ‘samosa’ attack on Wednesday.
The issue of naming the modernised domestic airport terminal-II in Chennai after former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran triggered a debate as the AIADMK councillors took objection to the stand taken by DMK president M. Karunanidhi. Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa accused Mr. Karunanidhi of playing ‘double-game’ in the Chennai airport issue.
“The DMK is saying one thing in the Assembly and taking a different stand outside. The Madurai Corporation condemns the politics being played by Mr. Karunanidhi,” the Mayor said amid cheers from the AIADMK members.
Mr. Chellappa reminded the DMK councillors that the State Assembly had passed a unanimous resolution that the Centre must name the modernised domestic airport terminal after the late MGR as opposition parties also supported it. He also objected to the behaviour of the DMK councillors who came in a black attire to the meeting.
There was sloganeering by members of both the parties. The AIADMK councillors started hurling the samosas and sweet packets, which were served to them, on their DMK counterparts even as the Mayor directed the watch and ward staff to evict the opposition party members from the hall.
While leaving the council meeting, the DMK members demanded that the Mayor and ruling party members should withdraw the comments made against their leader Mr. Karunanidhi.
Corporation Commissioner R.Nanthagopal, Deputy Mayor R.Gopalakrishnan and senior officials were present at the meeting.
