Translation of the ‘Samacheer Kalvi' school textbooks in to four languages - Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Urdu - has been completed.
From 2010-11 academic year, the State Government is implementing the Equitable Standard of School Education for Class I and Class VI across all types of schools.
The uniform textbooks have already been prepared for Tamil and English medium students and have gone for printing.
Thangam Thennarasu, Minister for School Education, told The Hindu here on Sunday that the process of getting the textbooks ready for ‘other medium' schools has already been taken up and the translated books would be distributed before schools reopen.
“Based on the English and Tamil medium books, the translation was done into Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and Urdu languages. They would be distributed by June,” he said.
Experts support
D. Rajendran, Member-Secretary, Common Board of School Education (Samacheer Kalvi), who is monitoring the translation work, said that the School Education Minister had a meeting with officials at Chennai on Saturday to expedite the process.
“The textbooks are being translated with experts' support at Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati and Mysore. Textbooks for mathematics, science and social science were translated in respective States and right now the design/colouring work is going on. They will be given for printing in about two weeks time,” Mr. Rajendran said.
Textbooks for those students having Arabic and Sanskrit as second language are also getting ready.
There are many schools (in other medium) in places like Krishnagiri, Hosur, Thiruvallur, Chennai and Kanyakumari bordering Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.
Mr. Rajendran said that teachers were deputed from the State to Tirupati, Mysore and Thiruvananthapuram to be with the experts involved in translation of ‘Samacheer Kalvi' textbooks.
