Senior IAS officer U. Sagayam chose to sleep in a rather bizarre place on Saturday night.

The officer appointed as the Legal Commissioner by the High Court to probe the multi-crore granite scam in Madurai spent the whole night at a graveyard when the district police expressed its inability to start the exhuming operation.

Officials close to Mr Sagayam said he was more worried that evidence at the graveyard would be tampered with.

While some of the officials in his team chose to stay in their vehicles, Mr. Sagayam spent most of the time chatting with journalists and local people.

An official said that Mr. Sagayam was awake almost the whole night.

He left for Circuit House only at daybreak on Sunday.

Pictures of Mr. Sagayam spending the night at the graveyard went viral in the social media with supporters hailing him for carrying on the fight against the ‘high and mighty’.

Police officials said Mr. Sagayam could have left the job of guarding the graveyard to the police and revenue officials as was suggested to him.
