High Court-appointed Legal Commissioner U. Sagayam began his third round of enquiry into the multi-crore granite scam here on Friday.

Mr. Sagayam enquired with Revenue Divisional Officer Senthil Kumari and Assistant Director of Mines Arumuga Nainar on the extent of illegal quarrying carried out in the district. Mr. Sagayam is likely to continue his inspection of quarries on Saturday.

He has already inspected a few places of archaeological importance in Tiruvathavur, Arittapatti and Keezhavalavu, where granite quarrying had either been done on the hillocks that housed Jain rock beds or within the 300-metre range of prohibited area.

Mr. Sagayam had sought more details of the tanks that had been encroached upon for quarrying and dumping quarry waste, and the extent of damage caused to agriculture operation and grazing land.

Meanwhile, a serving police constable and a few retired police personnel submitted petitions to Mr. Sagayam complaining that a residential layout developed for police personnel at Pudu Thamaraipatti was encroached upon by a quarry operator who dumped huge granite blocks there.

Some of the police personnel were forced to sell their plots, the petitioners complained.

This is the third batch of police personnel complaining to the Legal Commissioner about the quarrying that was carried close to the residential areas.
