The 24th Road Safety Week campaign kicked off here on Tuesday.
Transport Department officials, in association with the Madurai City Traffic Police, distributed pamphlets to motorists and public at Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand.
Student volunteers pasted black stickers on two-wheelers and bigger vehicles to promote safe driving practices at the railway junction on West Veli Street.
Vehicles using air-horns within city limits were stopped by the officials. Motorists were asked to avoid using mobile phones while driving. The risks involved in drinking and driving were highlighted during the campaign.
Transport officials led by RTO (North) N. Ravichandran, Natarajan (south) and ACP (traffic) K. Magudapathy conducted the campaign. Motor vehicle inspectors M.V. Ganesa Subramani, A. Mookan, Kalai Selvi, Saravana Kumaran, Kartikeyan and Vijay participated in the drive.
According to a press release, blood donation and eye screening camps will be held. Students will be taught to follow traffic signals.
