Up in arms: Members of Tamil Nadu Noon Meal Employees’ Association staging a road roko in Madurai on Tuesday.

Around 300 members belonging to the Tamil Nadu Noon Meal Employees’ Association (TNNMEA) staged a road roko near Madurai Collectorate here on Tuesday as part of their State-wide protest to highlight various demands.

R. Gowriammal, district president, TNNMEA, said that their key demand was to bring all the noon employees under time scale-based salary structure by making them permanent employees.

She said that despite promises made in the election manifesto to abolish engagement of workers on consolidated pay basis and to fill all vacancies, the present government was yet to take any in this regard.

Urging the government to fill all the vacancies, the protesters said that qualified noon meal workers should be promoted and absorbed in the vacancies wherever possible.

The protesters, majority of whom were women, were detained by the police. TNMEA said that since the protest had been planned for three consecutive days, it will continue on Wednesday and Thursday.

A. Solaiyan, district secretary, TNMEA, M. Murugan, district president, Tamil Nadu Government Employees Association (TNGEA), S. Krishnan, district secretary, TNGEA also participated.
