Revenue Department officials seized over 150 litres of acid at various shops while conducting surprise raids here on Sunday.

Revenue Divisional Officer S. Arumugam said a team of officials had seized 143 litres of acid being sold illegally at five shops in Avaniapuram and Kamarajar Salai. “The officials have reported the illegal sale to the Avaniapuram and Teppakulam police stations and a case will be registered against the owners,” he said. Similarly, officials seized 9.5 litres of acid at a shop in Alanganallur. Officials from the district administration said that raids were carried out in a few shops in Melur as well.

Following the acid attack on two college girls in Tirumangalam on Friday, the district administration has taken steps to regulate sale of acid and special teams of revenue officials have been formed to carry out raids on shops. Sellers of acid and other corrosive materials should possess a valid licence and maintain proper records of their customers to keep a check on them and prevent misuse.
