Over 200 residents of Malaipatti near here laid a siege to a TASMAC retail shop that was about to be inaugurated on Wednesday, seeking its removal.
The shop that was earlier located on Athukadai Street in Srivilliputtur Town was removed after the shop created a lot of hurdles to vehicular movement on the road.
When the officials got another shop ready and were about to open it at noon in Malaipatti, scores of residents, including a large number of women, gathered and laid siege to it.
Police and revenue officials tried to pacify them.
“We are against a new TASMAC shop which would spoil the residential area,” said Communist Party of India (Marxist) Srivilliputtur Town secretary, M. Tirumalai.
He said that a TASMAC shop was already located just 50 metres away at Malaipatti on the same Srivilliputtur-Tiruvannamalai Road. He said that a school was located closeby.
People have to use this road everyday as the bus stops are here, he complained.
However, the revenue officials later pacified them and promised to take up the issue with the Collector. The shop could not be opened on Wednesday.
