Residents in various parts of the city came to the streets on Sunday demanding immediate solution to the drinking water crisis.

People gathered at Anna Nagar, under the banner of ‘Naanal Nanbargal’, and sought the intervention of the Corporation and the district administration in solving the problem. The areas they focused, during their token fast, were Melamadai, Anna Nagar, Vandiyur, Yagappa Nagar, Gomathipuram, K. K. Nagar and Maanagari.

“Steps have to be taken on a war-footing to solve the drinking water crisis in our areas. We want at least one public tap for every 40 houses and water should be distributed,” they demanded.

Speaking on behalf of the protestors, M. Thamizhthaasan and V. Karthikeyan, both coordinators of Naanal Nanbargal, said that the Corporation should take steps to desilt Vandiyur lake instead of promoting it as a tourist spot.

“We want water and tourism is not our concern. Authorities should revive the lake which has got dried up. Despite our appeal, the administration is not responding,” they accused.

The residents also urged the officials to make rainwater harvesting and tree plantation mandatory for all buildings. They also criticised the corporation for not undertaking a scientific assessment before digging bore wells. While demanding a white paper from the State Government on the measures taken to overcome severe drought, the protestors said it was time a concrete action plan is evolved to increase the groundwater table.
