The renovated N.M.R. Subbaraman Park inside the Madurai Kamaraj University (MKU) College campus and a basketball court laid there were inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Kalyani Mathivanan on Monday.

The park, which was renovated at a cost of Rs.35 lakh by the Madurai Corporation, also has a cricket pitch and nets for practice, a fountain at the entrance and a path around for walkers. Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Dr.Kalyani said, “Educational institutions should offer a combination of good health and academic excellence. The basketball court was laid inside the park, keeping in mind the needs of the students.”

Corporation Commissioner R. Nanthagopal urged the students to make good use of the park. “Apart from encouraging sports, this space will give a welcome break from studies for the students,” he said.

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa said the park would be kept open for specific hours to the general public as well.
