Removal of seemai karuvelam from Veerapanjan tank begins

The district administration has so far removed trees from 6,634 hectares

As part of the seemai karuvelam removal work being carried out across the district, removal of wild growth inside Veerapanjan tank was inaugurated by Collector K. Veera Raghava Rao on Tuesday.

Officials said that the work in the tank was being carried out with financial contribution from revenue officials in Madurai East taluk, in which the tank is located. The tank has seemai karuvelam growth on 26.79 hectares, a statement issued by the district administration said. The statement added that the district administration had thus far removed seemai karuvelam trees from 6,634 hectares.

R. Gandhi and N. Krishnaveni, Advocate Commissioners appointed by Madurai Bench of Madras High Court to monitor removal of seemai karuvelam trees in Madurai district, also participated in the inauguration.
