Members of the Ramanathapuram Real Estate and Development Association staged a demonstration here on Monday, protesting against the curbs on registration of plots and draw the attention of the government on the plight of the realtors and general public.

Led by R. Jayapandian, association district president, a large number of realtors and general public staged the protest in front Aranmanai here to draw the attention of the government that the curbs imposed by the Madras High Court on registration of properties posed a serious threat to the livelihood of thousands of realtors in the State.

“We have been struggling for the past six months and public also faced difficulties in selling their properties to meet urgent educational and marriage expenditures,” he said addressing the protest.

The High Court order banning registration of unapproved plots and houses built in such housing layouts and conversion of agriculture lands for non-agricultural use in an unplanned manner had led to drastic fall in registration of properties and severely affected the livelihood of the realtors, he said.

The blanket ban had not only affected those who were in the real estate business but a large number of poor and middle class people, who had bought unapproved layouts and built houses after obtaining necessary approval from the local bodies but could not sell those plots and houses for emergency now, he said.

Revenue to the government in terms of registration fee and purchase of stamp papers also witnessed a sharp decline during the last six months, he said, and urged the government to come to the rescue of the realtors and general public.
