Amidt tight security, the Ram Rajya Rath yatra entered Madurai on Tuesday evening.
The yatra wound through the arterial roads of the city before reaching Ramakrishna Mutt for the night halt. The yatra would resume its journey on Wednesday morning and leave for Rameswaram.
The peak hour traffic on the city roads was disrupted due to the high-security yatra invloving a huge posse of policemen.
Earlier, several protests were held by political parties against permission given for the yatra.
After the early morning arrest of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi leader Thol. Thirumavalavan near Peraiyur, party cadres came in several batches to stage road roko at different places. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres, led by its urban district secretary, G. Thalapathi, staged a road blockade near Periyar bus stand.
Cadres of Manitheneya Makkal Katchi, Tamilaga Makkal Jananayaga Katchi, and Social Democratic Party of India staged protests at different places. Similar protests were also held in the rural police district limits also.
