With the objective of creating awareness among the public about minimising the use and disposal of plastic materials, a rally will be taken out in the city on October 2, by different sections of the society.

An initiative of the Madurai Chapter of Soroptimist International, the rally will include students, members of different associations and the public, its president Anitha Rajarajan told journalists in Madurai on Tuesday.

Colleges such as Thiagarajar College, Lady Doak College and schools including Mahatma School and TVS School had been invited. Several educational institutions will also be declared as ‘plastic-free’ campus on that day, she said.

Cloth shopping bags, with eco-friendly slogans, will also be distributed to the participants of the rally so that use of plastic could be reduced. The organisation was also working towards segregation of waste at source.

Another initiative being contemplated in this direction was advocating use of paper bags at ‘Uzhavar sandhais,’ meat and chicken shops.

Ms. Anitha said that the rally would commence at Race Course Ground and conclude at Gandhi Memorial Museum. Other initiatives of the Madurai Chapter include donating educational aid material to students of Corporation schools.

A programme to create awareness about breast cancer among urban and rural women has been planned for next month by roping in a doctor from Chennai, she said.
