Raise milk procurement prices, says association

Members of the Tamil Nadu Milk Producer's Association went on a strike and staged a demonstration at Usilampatti in the district on Monday demanding an increase of Rs. 5 per litre of cow milk in procurement price from the present Rs. 16 a litre.

Impact minimal

Officials of the Madurai Aavin, which also includes Theni district, said that the impact of the strike on milk procurement was minimal. While it declined by 1,160 litres in Madurai, procurement went up in Theni by a marginal 300 litres.

The procurement levels in Madurai district is usually around 80,000 litres of milk a day with Theni district accounting for 1.16 lakh litres, the officials said.

The last revision of Rs. 2 in milk procurement was done in September, 2009.
