Heavy rain, accompanied by strong wind, lashed Madurai and the suburbs for almost two hours on Saturday evening.

Following the downpour, many low-lying areas in the city were inundated. Branches of trees fell on the road in many places. Office-goers and schoolchildren were caught unawares by the sudden rain, as many were seen taking shelter under trees and bus stops. To add to the woes, power outage in many places irked the residents. Frequency of city buses was reduced, resulting in huge crowds in buses, particularly from Periyar bus stand to Mattuthavani.

Water-logged roads caused hardship to motorists and pedestrians.
