Members of Southern Railway Mazdoor Union staged a demonstration in front of Tirunelveli railway junction on Friday in protest against “anomalies” in the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations.

Led by N. Subbiah, SRMU divisional vice-president, the protestors raised slogans against “anti-labour recommendations.”

The protestors said that Central government employees had been let down as there was only a marginal increase in pay though the Centre was claiming that it had effected an increase of 23 per cent.

Though the union postponed their proposed indefinite strike following certain assurances from the Centre, the railway employees would not hesitate to go ahead with the protest if their “genuine demands” were not met.

SRMU office-bearers Swamidas, Muthu, Thamhziarasan, Janagarani, Ganesan and others spoke.
