The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday directed the Executive Engineer (Building and Planning) of the Public Works Department to submit the site plan of the Madurai District Courts complex with an estimate on or before December 11 for preventing waterlogging in the court complex .

The PWD department’s Executive Engineers of Building and Planning and Water Resources Organisation on Thursday filed their status report before the Division Bench of Justices M.Venugopal and Abdul Quddhose, regarding the removal of stagnant water from the court campus. They sought an estimate of ₹2.64 crore for filling gravel in waterlogging areas and for building a retaining wall.

The court had earlier directed the PWD officials to take necessary steps to drain water stagnating in the court campus. It had observed that the stagnant water could be a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes. Draining water from the campus would be of relief to advocates, litigants and the general public, the court had earlier observed.

Following the court direction, the PWD removed encroachments that blocked the path of the water. Pumping out water to the Vandiyur tank was in progress, the PWD said. The case has been posted for December 12 for further hearing.
