The Puthiya Tamilagam has opposed the decision of the Ramanathapuram police to ban hired vehicles from carrying people to the memorials of community leaders.
Talking to reporters here on Tuesday, its president K.Krishnasamy wondered whether the decision of the district administration and the police to enforce the ban had any legal validity.
“Though there could be a good intention behind the ban … to control the crowd in the wake of violent incidents reported during the memorial visits in the last two years, the decision should have been taken after a discussion with the political parties,” he said. Terming it a unilateral decision, he said it was biased against one section of the people.
“Not all people, who want to visit the memorial, own vehicles,” Dr.Krishnasamy said.
Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran’s death anniversary is observed on September 11.
On the beach sand quarrying scam, he said the political parties in Tamil Nadu were not showing a positive intention to check illegal quarrying. He demanded an investigation into the scam by the Central Bureau of Investigation considering the magnitude of the scam and the complexities involved in it.
