District Collector R. Selvaraj has refuted the claim by the People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) that it was forced to resume indefinite fast from May 1 as the official machinery had failed to fulfil promises made during talks held at Radhapuram recently.
It had alleged that the officials promised to give them copies of a range of documents pertaining to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project during talks held earlier, but failed to fulfil their assurance.
According to Dr. Selvaraj, representatives of the protesters, who participated in the talks on March 27, appealed to officials to facilitate the release of the detained protesters. The official machinery released all anti-nuke activists except Sathish and Muhilan, who were facing serious charges. The prohibitory orders were relaxed to a greater extent.
“At no point did we assure them anything regarding the supply of any document relating to the KKNPP and conduct of a mock disaster management drill. Their claim is baseless and most unfortunate.” Dr. Selvaraj urged the media to crosscheck allegations by anti-nuke activists before coming out with such reports.
