Members of various civil society organisations in the city came together here on Monday, and sought the revocation of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by the government.
Protesting the recent verdict of the Supreme Court, which held homosexuality as illegal under the IPC section, the activists said it violated their fundamental right of life and liberty and the right to equality guaranteed under the Constitution.
Speaking to media persons, Rajini, convenor, People’s Union for Human Rights (PUHR), said the government should make amendments to the existing law or delete it.
Referring to crimes against women, she said the number of incidences of crimes against women was on the rise.
Hence the government should take efforts to strictly implement the recommendations of the Justice Verma Commission.
Around 20 persons, including members of Barathi Kannamma Trust, took part in the demonstration.
Gay rights and human rights activists said they planned to take up the case with a larger bench if the Centre failed to take steps to appeal against the verdict.
