Over 100 cadres of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) and Students’ Federation of India (SFI) were arrested when they attempted to stage a rail roko here protesting against the hike in rail fare on Wednesday.

The cadres, led by DYFI State treasurer S. Bala, broke the police cordon outside the railway junction on West Veli Street and rushed towards the portico. However, they were prevented by a strong posse of city police, Railway Protection Force and Tamil Nadu Railway Police.

AIDWA rural district functionary S.K. Ponnuthai flayed the Centre for raising passenger fares and freight rates. They protested against the move by the Centre to increase the price of domestic cooking gas cylinders by Rs.10 every month and opposed attempts to force Hindi as the official language for Central government ministries on social media.

SFI State president Uchimahali addressed the protesters.
