High drama prevailed in the law college campus here on Monday, when some students allegedly locked the staff room from outside, where the principal Thangapandian, was seated with a few of his colleagues.

As the news spread, police rushed to the spot, but stayed away from entering into the campus and watched the development. For about two hours from 5.30 p.m. the issue simmered with plenty of rumours flying inside and outside the campus situated on the Thangaraj Salai.

After intervention of senior office-bearers from the Madurai Bar Association, the principal was set free, police said at around 8 p.m.

The students are on strike demanding the government to issue free laptops to them.

They are also opposing the move to open private law colleges, among others.

The college had announced indefinite closure last week, a college source said.
