A prank call made by a youth, demanding ransom for the safe return of a missing boy to his uncle, has landed him in jail on Friday.

Police said that K. Thangasamy of West Kallandiri on Wednesday received a call from a stranger who claimed to have kept his nephew under his custody. Without specifying the ransom amount, he demanded money from him. The police said that Thangasamy’s 12-year-old nephew went missing from his house in West Kallandiri on August 19. He had lodged a boy-missing complaint with the Appantirupathi police. Subsequently, pamphlets about the missing boy and the phone number to be contacted to pass on information about the boy were pasted at several places.

On seeing the pamphlet, the stranger had called Thangasamy. After the latter alerted the police, he was picked up from Mattuthavani. He is identified as S. Vijay Anand of Munnar. He was remanded in judicial custody.
