Residents of Managiri staged a road blockade near the Melamadai junction during the rush hours in the evening on Wednesday, demanding action against individuals belonging to intermediate caste groups who had allegedly beaten up a few youth of a Scheduled Caste.
Both the groups were engaged in a poster war hailing their respective castes.
This led to an uncomfortable situation and based on that the gang fight had emerged, said a police official of the Anna Nagar station.
The Anna Nagar police arrested youth belonging to both sides and filed cases against both groups under the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989 as well as sections under the Indian Penal Code. However, the SC residents took to the road alleging that the police were biased. They blamed the local corporation councillor for the violence.
Deputy Commissioner of Police R.Thirunavukkarusu held talks with the protestors and promised action following which they dispersed.
Traffic was affected for almost 45 minutes.
