The Tamil Nadu State Election Commission has informed the Madras High Court Bench here on steps taken to update the voters list before the ensuing local body elections and correct errors such as existence of multiple entries and retention of names of dead and migrated voters.

The submission was made before Justices Nooty Ramamohana Rao and S.S. Sundar during a hearing of a public interest litigation petition filed by Sekar of Thoothukudi, seeking a direction to the Thoothukudi District Election Officer (DEO) to delete multiple entries and correct other discrepancies in the electoral rolls of Vilathikulam Assembly Constituency.

It was brought to the notice of the judges that the Election Commission on May 25 issued guidelines to all DEOs on the issue of updating the electoral rolls.

“Therefore, the grievance of the petitioner is already being addressed by the Chief Electoral Officer by bringing to the notice of all DEOs, the measures and steps to be taken for updating the electoral rolls. “If the writ petitioner has still got any grievance, he may seek redressal thereof by approaching the District Election Officer concerned or the Chief Electoral Officer of the State,” the Bench said, disposing of the PIL petition.
