The State police have decided to provide personal security officers to more leaders belonging to Hindu organisations in the south zone following the recent murders of Hindu outfit leaders in Tamil Nadu.
The State secretary of Hindu Munnani, S. Vellaiyappan, was murdered in Vellore on July 1 and the general secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party, ‘auditor’ V. Ramesh, was hacked to death in Salem on Friday.
Stating that three State-level leaders of the BJP had been murdered in the past one year, the party’s State president Pon. Radhakrishnan, had said the Tamil Nadu government had not provided enough security to its leaders.
“The Superintendents of Police will give security to a few leaders in their districts following the murders,” Inspector General of Police (South Zone), Abhay Kumar Singh told The Hindu.
While the Madurai City police have decided to provide security to three more leaders, the rural district police have identified two leaders for giving protection.
The police have classified the leaders into two categories based on the threat perception. While the first category will get round-the-clock armed PSOs, the next category will be provided the PSOs whenever they move to areas that are considered risky.
