The unexpected but timely arrival of a police vehicle in Jaihindpuram prevented a deadly attack by an armed gang on the members of its rival group on Monday morning.

The police said R. Soundar, a history-sheeter under the Jaihindpuram police station limits, was proceeding in a car from Tirunagar to the district court complex to sign a register in compliance with his bail condition.

When the car was near Tamil Nadu Polytechnic College, it was intercepted by an SUV at around 9.30 a.m. Eight armed persons from the SUV jumped out and began attacking the car.

Inspector of Police V. Sugumaran, who was going towards Subramaniyapuram police station at the time, passed by, and on seeing the attack, he rushed towards the car. However, the perpetrators stopped the attack and fled in their SUV towards Jeeva Nagar. Police said the attack was the fallout of a murder.
