Police crack Devakottai murder for gain

In a swift move, the special police teams have cracked a recent murder for gain in Devakottai by arresting five accused and recovering from them nine sovereigns of gold jewellery and Rs.3.85 lakh.

The police said Meiyappa Chettiyar (59) and his wife Lakshmi (59) were alone at their house in Devakottai, when a three-member gang entered the house on the pretext of checking the cable connection on July 25. After throwing chilli powder on the faces of the couple, the gang members throttled Mrs.Lakshmi with a towel, and stabbed Mr.Chettiyar to death and escaped with nine sovereigns of jewellery and Rs 6.lakhs in cash.

Three special teams were formed and the teams arrested five accused and recovered a gold chain weighing five and a half sovereigns, bangles weighing three and a half sovereigns and Rs 3.85 lakh in cash.

Producing the accused at a press conference in Devakottai on Tuesday, SP Ashwin Kotnis said two more accused were still at large and they would be arrested soon.
