‘Someone close to victims could have masterminded the crime’

A day after two conmen tricked a middle aged woman to hand over gold and cash posing as an Income Tax official and a police officer in Palanganatham on Tuesday, the city police are suspecting a few persons close to the victims who could have masterminded the crime.

Two men -- one sporting a turban and fake beard and another sporting a police uniform -- barged into the house of Corporation Sanitary Inspector C. Veeran in Tiruvalluvar Nagar and took away with them 49 sovereigns of gold, ₹ 45,000 and two mobile phones in the forenoon.

All the clue that the police have got so far is a closed circuit television camera footage through which they have got some details of the car.

“Initially, the victims gave a different identity of the car and the entire police force was looking for a particular make and type of the vehicle. However, later, the CCTV footage showed a different car coming out of the narrow lane,” a police source said. By then, it was too late for the police to zero in on the car.

The police said that someone who had finer details about the victims and topography of the area had struck the house.

“The car had straight away come into the narrow lane and stopped exactly outside the victim’s house. The duo had spoken about two houses Veeran had bought in recent years,” a police officer said.

The house is located some 700 metres away from Tirupparankundram Road and the way wound through lanes and by-lanes so much so that every police officer had to be guided to the house after the crime took place.

“With the way the accused got to the house and escaped from there without much difficulty, we suspect that they could have gone for recce and made themselves familiar with the topography,” an official said.

The police suspect that someone close to Veeran with whom he had financial transaction or his colleagues who had all details about the name, address and the routine movement of Veeran could have masterminded the crime.

A police officer said that they were chasing a few leads to zero in on the identity of the criminals.
