Four persons, including two from Andhra Pradesh, were arrested and over 100 kilograms of high-grade ganja, claimed to be worth about Rs. 25 lakh, was seized here on Monday.
Speaking to reporters, Additional Deputy Superintendent of Police A. Myil Vaganan and DSP (Usilampatti) D. Kumar said that a car which did not stop near Sholavandan was intercepted near Pandiarajapuram railway gate. The Vadipatti police found 55 bundles of ganja stashed in the car.
Investigations revealed the gang had procured the ganja from a place on the Andhra Pradesh-Orissa border. After transporting it by rail and road to the city, it was being smuggled in small quantities for sale through agents at various places in this region, besides Kumbakonam in Thanjavur district among other places.
The gang seemed to be in the business of buying and selling narcotics for the last one to two years, Mr. Myil Vaganan said.
The arrested persons were: car driver Venkatesh Babu (34), son of Natarajan of Sammattipuram, Madurai; Deivendran (44), son of Rasu Thevar of Kanavaipatti, Madurai; Ramarao (42), son of Malanna; and Babu Rao (36), son of Nadappa, both from Vishakapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
A search was on to secure four more persons, the officers said and special teams had been are deployed.
A case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances(NDPS) Act had been registered against the four persons, and the car was seized.
The four were produced before a court. Superintendent of Police Asra Garg commended the teams for their good work.
